A Catalina Macaw is a beautiful hybrid that is a cross between the two most popular Macaws species.

Feeding & Care

Do not feed birds fruit seeds, avocados, chocolate, onions, apple seeds, uncooked beans, uncooked rice, alcohol or caffeine as these can cause serious medical problems, and kill them

A Catalina’s diet should consist of 70% pellets, 30% fresh fruit & veggies.

They need a lot of daily social interaction so they can bond with your “flock” both direct face to face, and indirect just being around the family.

They can be very destructive which is why they need a variety of toys to keep them mentally stimulated, and from getting bored which can lead to self mutilation.

They need a variety of different sized perches to help exercise, and stretch their feet.

The Catalina Macaw is striking in color. They typically have orange to red feathers on their chesy, and some on their back. With the top of their head being a green that fades into bright blues. the underside of their tales, and wings is a mixture of bright orange, and yellow. They have black beaks, and feet. They also have white skin on their face with a small black feather pattern that is unique to each bird. When they are excited or angry they will “blush” like a person will with the white skin turning red.

Catalina Macaws are a 1st generation hybrid which means that both of their parents are naturally occuring Macaws. The parents of a Catalina Macaw are a Scarlet Macaw bred with a Blue & Gold Macaw which is why they have such a striking color variation. The Blue & Gold side makes this Macaw very loving, affectionate, and silly. While the Scarlet side maces them very inquisitive. This makes them very eager to learn tricks, and they do so quickly. Catalina Macaws also do have the strong willed side of a Scarlet which if not trained properly or handled adequately can make them turn quite aggressive as they will try to take dominance.

They live 60 to 85 years, and some even older due to modern healthier diets, exercise, and mental stimulation. Macaws are not a parrot for first time bird owners, and a lot of thought, and consideration should go into the idea of getting one for a companion bird.
